The Jurong Rock Cavern (JRC) project for hydrocarbon storage generates a substantial volume of sedimentary rocks in the process of excavating the underground cavern space. While the larger sedimentary rocks can be used for shore protection works, there is little demand for the smaller sedimentary rocks as useful construction materials.
Based on an earlier study, it was found that the rocks can potentially be used as road construction materials, such as road base. We would like to explore the use of the rocks for higher value road construction materials, such as asphaltic wearing course. Further laboratory tests will be necessary to determine the performance of the sedimentary rock material when used for road construction. If the laboratory tests results are favourable, a field test will be conducted to test the material’s performance under real traffic conditions.
We welcome interested parties to submit proposals on innovative and cost-efficient technologies that can convert the excavated rocks into road construction materials that can meet the requirements of the technical authorities.
